At one time or another, many women consider rejuvenating the appearance of their breasts with a breast lift or breast augmentation. Over time, factors such as age, weight gain or loss, and hormonal changes can cause the breasts to lose volume or sag. These changes can cause clothing to fit differently and even impact self-confidence. For women interested in restoring or adding volume or lift in their breasts, breast augmentation or lift can boost self-confidence and enhance their quality of life. But how do you know which procedure is right for you?
Board-certified New Jersey plastic surgeon Dr. Alexis Parcells specializes in breast aesthetics and can help you determine the best possible treatment plan to achieve a look you’ll love.
Breast augmentation addresses the size and shape of the breasts but does not affect the position of the breasts on the chest wall. Breast augmentation most often involves placing implants beneath the skin to increase volume and achieve the desired shape.
Breast augmentation offers several benefits to women who would like to change the size or shape of their breasts. Thanks to a wide selection of breast implant types, breast augmentation patients can select their ideal volume, shape, feel, and profile. Breast implants may also be placed above or underneath the chest muscle according to the patient’s aesthetic and practical preferences. Breast augmentation can also correct asymmetry in women whose breasts are of different sizes.
During your breast augmentation consultation, Dr. Parcells will examine you and ask you about your medical history and the improvements you would like to see in your breasts. Together, you will thoroughly discuss your options and develop the most advantageous treatment plan for your unique needs, including implant selection, incision location, and implant placement.
Breast augmentation surgery is an outpatient procedure and is typically performed under general anesthesia. Surgery usually takes one to two hours. Most of the time, Dr. Parcells inserts implants through small (1.5-cm) incisions beneath the breast. Once healed, these incisions are well-hidden within the natural crease of the breast.
After your breast augmentation surgery, you will experience mild to moderate discomfort for several days. However, most patients return to work in about one week. You will also wear a surgical bra for several weeks to stabilize your implants and help your body recover.
While you will notice an immediate increase in the volume of your breasts, your breast augmentation results will take several months to develop. Over these several months, your implants will settle into their final position, and your natural breast tissue and muscle will relax around the implants. Once this “drop and fluff” process is complete, your breasts will appear fuller, softer, and more natural than when they were first placed.
In contrast to breast augmentation surgery, breast lift surgery focuses on the breasts’ position on the chest wall. While a breast lift can shape the breasts and improve symmetry, it does not increase breast volume. Instead, a breast lift generally involves the strategic removal of excess skin and breast tissue to raise the position of the breasts for a perkier and more youthful appearance.
In addition to raising the breasts’ position on the chest wall, a breast lift can correct asymmetry, improve cleavage, reposition the nipples, and reduce the size of areolas. A breast lift, like breast augmentation, can enhance the quality of life and increase feelings of youth and sexiness.
During your consultation with Dr. Parcells, she will examine you and ask you about your concerns regarding the appearance of your breasts. Based on your specific breast lift goals, together, you and Dr. Parcells will develop a detailed surgical plan.
Breast lift surgery is an outpatient procedure performed under general anesthesia and may take three to four hours. Depending on the surgical plan, Dr. Parcells will use either a “lollipop” or “anchor” incision to remove excess tissue to lift and reshape the breasts. Both of these incisions result in a vertical scar beneath the nipple. The appearance of these scars will significantly fade in the months following surgery. Anchor incisions used to remove a larger quantity of tissue also cause scarring underneath the fold of the breast. This incision follows the breasts’ contour and is generally well-hidden.
Like breast augmentation surgery, you can expect mild to moderate discomfort during the first few days following surgery, and most patients return to work within a week. A surgical bra will help your breasts to heal as planned. Ultimately, you can look forward to improved lift, symmetry, and shape.
While some women’s cosmetic goals may only involve one of these procedures, others may benefit from combined breast lift and augmentation surgery. This comprehensive breast-sculpting procedure packs all the perks of breast lift and augmentation procedures to produce fuller, perkier, lifted, more symmetrical breasts.
