Why Lip Fillers?

Whether you are looking for a subtle change or to enhance your natural look, one of the most satisfying changes you can make to your face is to change the look of your lips.

If you have naturally thin lips, or if your lips don't seem to match your facial features, a filler treatment can make your lips fuller and more youthful.

How Do Lip Fillers Work?

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in our bodies. One of its main functions is to retain water, which helps keep the skin smooth and supple.

Lip fillers are made of a synthetic version of hyaluronic acid. It is incredibly effective in reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles of the face. Even more, by deliberately placing filler into the lips, Dr. Parcells can precisely enhance and define your lip shape. Whether your lips have thinned over time, or you are just looking for something different, lip fillers provide an instant improvement to your overall facial aesthetic.

Are Lip Fillers the Same as Neurotoxins, Such as Botox?

While both fillers and Botox are used to treat wrinkles, they work in completely different ways. Neurotoxins, such as Botox, are injected into the muscles of the forehead and around the eyes, temporarily paralyzing these muscles and reducing the appearance of wrinkles.

You can read more about botox HERE. Dr. Parcells currently uses the Juvederm family of fillers. Juvederm, Voluma, Volbella, and Vollure are FDA approved to fill in wrinkles. Other common areas to treat include folds around the nose and mouth and the cheeks. Depending on where you have lost volume, fillers may be an effective treatment to restore a natural, youthful appearance. This same practice can be applied to the lips, to make them fuller and more defined, giving you a younger and sexier pout. Both products are often used in combination to deliver the look you want.

Lip Filler Procedure

You will first meet with Dr. Parcells to address your concerns, and together you will determine your goals for care. Next, a numbing cream may be applied to your lips. Lip fillers are also mixed with a numbing agent, called lidocaine, to make the experience even more comfortable.

Using a very thin needle, the filler is injected directly into the lip, balancing precision and artistry to achieve your desired cosmetic look. Best of all, with the exception of some mild post-injection swelling, the results are instantaneous. You may choose to ice the area over the next few days. Final results are often seen within 1-2 weeks after placement.

Am I a Candidate for Lip Fillers?

Lip fillers are a fantastic choice for those looking to restore a youthful appearance to their lips, or if you’re just looking to make a change in your look.

When you meet with Dr. Parcells, she will thoroughly evaluate your medical history and advise you on whether fillers are right for you. You must be at least 18 years of age and must not have an allergy to anaphylaxis. Lip filler cannot be used on anyone who has a bleeding disorder, or anyone with a lidocaine allergy.

How Long Do Lip Fillers Last?

In general, lip fillers last approximately 6-12 months, and are slowly reabsorbed by the body. In rare cases, if you are dissatisfied with your results in any way, lip fillers can be dissolved.

Having an honest conversation with Dr. Parcells, and allowing her expertise to guide you will prevent situations like this from occurring. If you’ve never tried lip fillers before, a great rule of thumb is to make changes slowly. Also, keep in mind that you can always add more!

Fillers FAQs

If you love how your lips look with filler and want to make this a permanent change, Dr. Parcells can also accomplish this with fat injections.

This consists of a minor surgical procedure where fat is liposuctioned from one part of your body, such as the abdomen, and placed directly into your lips for a more long-lasting effect.

Please take a look at our Botox page to understand how this medication works.

As lip fillers are a synthetic version of a naturally occurring substance in the body, side effects are unusual, and infection is rare. The most common occurrences are bruising or injection site discomfort, but these typically do not last long.

To avoid improper placement, which can lead to rare but serious complications, only a qualified and experienced board-certified plastic surgeon, like Dr. Parcells should perform these injections.

Finally, if you have a history of Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV), an outbreak can occur. When you meet with Dr. Parcells for your consultation, she can determine if it is necessary to take herpes medication immediately prior to or after filler placement.
