Liposuction

Liposuction is a powerful procedure used to address stubborn areas of fat that are not responsive to weight loss.

What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a powerful procedure used to address stubborn areas of fat that are not responsive to weight loss.

Despite diet and exercise, many women continue to experience unwanted fat in certain problem areas, including the abdomen, upper back, upper arms, thighs, neck, and around the knees. This can be extremely frustrating.

The procedure to improve these problem areas involves only the use of small incisions and cannulas (thin tubes) to gently suction out excess fat. Downtime is minimal and liposuction cost is well worth the truly life-changing results.

What are the Benefits of Liposuction?

There are several benefits to getting liposuction done. Other than removing excess, unwanted fat from areas you don’t want it, here are a few more benefits:

  • Fat removal in the thighs, hips, and buttocks
  • Removal of fatty tissue in the chest or breasts
  • Contoured curves
  • A sculpted and shaped figure

What are the Areas Where Liposuction Can Help?

Stomach liposuction is not the only excess fat removal procedure offered at Parcells Plastic Surgery. We also offer:

  • Fat removal in the thighs, hips, and buttocks
  • Removal of fatty tissue in the chest or breasts
  • Liposuction in the neck, chin, and surrounding areas
  • Arm liposuction

Types of Liposuction

Dr. Alexis Parcells performs a few different types of liposuction procedures, including tumescent liposuction, power-assisted liposuction, and ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL).
  • Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction: When performing UAL, Dr. Parcells breaks up fat cell walls by using sound waves. The sound waves are aimed just under the skin.
  • Tumescent liposuction: This type of liposuction involves a sterile saline solution that softens the fat. The solution is deposited in the area where the procedure takes place. The fat is easier to suck out of the body by using the solution.
  • Power-Assisted Liposuction: PAL uses a handpiece that breaks up the fat. Heat is not used during this liposuction method.
For all liposuction methods, small incisions are made to fit a small tube that vacuums the fat out.

Liposuction Procedure

While considered routine and safe, liposuction is best performed in a licensed surgical facility, under general anesthesia. This is for your safety, and to achieve the best results for your liposuction procedure.

To begin, once you are safely asleep and closely monitored by anesthesia staff, Dr. Parcells injects a tumescent solution, which is a mixture of normal saline and numbing medication, into the treatment area. This step helps to make the recovery more comfortable and minimizes blood loss.
Then, she makes several small incisions that are strategically placed around the treatment area, just large enough to insert the cannula. Once in place, using the most advanced liposuction techniques, unwanted fat is carefully removed, and the area is contoured to achieve the desired aesthetic result. Finally, the incisions are seamlessly closed, and a compression garment is placed. Depending on how many areas are being treated, the surgery can last for several hours. After surgery, you’ll relax in the recovery room until you are ready to go home. If larger areas were operated on, Dr. Parcells will recommend an overnight stay, just to keep a closer eye on you.

Candidates for Liposuction

Certain conditions are required for those seeking liposuction surgery. Patients eligible to receive liposuction include those who:
  • Are at or close to their ideal body weight
  • Can safely maintain this weight without starvation, extreme diets or excessively working out
  • Are in good, general health, and lead an active lifestyle
  • Have been unsuccessful at correcting problem areas with diet and exercise, especially in stubborn spots such as the upper arms, back, abdomen, hips, and thighs
  • Have good skin elasticity, which can be determined at your consultation visit

Recovery After Liposuction

You may experience mild to moderate discomfort for several days following surgery but you may be back to your regular daily activities in as little as a week.

Depending on your job, you can return to work in just a few days. Getting back to the gym will take about four weeks. To minimize swelling and aid in shaping, you’ll wear a compression garment for several weeks after the procedure. It can be removed for bathing and should be changed daily. The discretely hidden scars will become less visible over time.

Liposuction FAQs

Liposuction is a noninvasive (no long scars) procedure that focuses on the removal of fat cells. A tummy tuck , also known as an abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure that focuses on tightening abdominal muscles and removing extra skin that has become stretched out after significant weight gain and loss, such as pregnancy.

Liposuction does remove fat cells from the body, but the results only become permanent when patients maintain a healthy lifestyle and weight. If a patient gains weight, fat cells can get bigger, and new fat cells can be produced. Patients who gain weight after liposuction normally look better than if they were not to have had liposuction at all due to the natural, even distribution of new fat cells in the body.
Belly fat can be removed with a stomach liposuction procedure. Dr. Parcells has over a decade of experience helping New Jersey liposuction patients get rid of belly fat with liposuction methods that work for their cosmetic goals.
All of these procedures are different methods of fat removal. Liposuction is a procedure that involves the direct removal of fat via suction, in a surgical procedure under anesthesia.

CoolSculpting is an office-based laser therapy, in which fat cells are reabsorbed by the body via freezing, throughout several treatments.

Kybella is an FDA-approved injectable enzyme that breaks down fat through a chemical reaction, approved for use under the chin. This can be done in an office visit with minimal discomfort.
The procedures done by Dr. Parcells are minimally invasive. This means she makes small incisions to perform the stomach liposuction. There is little scarring from the incisions, but over time, the scars become less visible. Dr. Parcells trained during the modern era of plastic surgery and uses the most advanced and minimally invasive techniques for minimal scarring.
How much fat can be removed depends on the patient. Dr. Parcells will take into account your health, your goals, and the area in which you are receiving liposuction. Make an appointment today to understand how much fat you may be able to remove and how many procedures you may need to achieve the look you desire.

Liposuction does not address excess skin or muscle separation. Should you have sagging skin after liposuction, Dr. Parcells may suggest receiving a tuck or lift to tighten the skin. For those who have excess skin or laxity of the abdominal wall, Dr. Parcells can combine liposuction with other procedures to achieve your desired results. This includes liposuction with a Brachioplasty, panniculectomy, abdominoplasty, fat transfer breast augmentation, or a total body lift.
