What is a Blepharoplasty
(Eyelid Surgery)?

One of the first signs of facial aging is seen in the eyes. A blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery or eyelid lift, is a way to permanently address aging eyes.

Many men and women are looking to correct loose skin, fine lines, and puffy bags that make them appear tired and old. The most definitive way to combat these signs of aging is with eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty. This facial plastic surgery procedure will result in a more youthful and lively appearance and has one of the highest satisfaction rates of all operations that Dr. Parcells performs.

Upper & Lower Blepharoplasty

Upper and lower blepharoplasty may be done separately or combined in the same surgery, depending on your desired outcome and your anatomy. Blepharoplasty may also be combined with another procedure such as a facelift, neck lift, breast, or body surgery.

Lower Blepharoplasty In the lower eyelids, bags or hollowness between the lower lid and the cheek are common complaints. A lower eyelid blepharoplasty involves the removal of excess skin and re-draping lower lid fat to smooth the transition from your lower lid into your cheek, resulting in a youthful appearance.

Upper Blepharoplasty In the upper eyelids, patients often complain of loose hanging skin in the natural creases of the upper eyelid and heaviness of the lids. Some patients even report difficulty raising their eyes and decreased vision. In an upper blepharoplasty or upper eyelid surgery, Dr. Parcells eliminates excess skin and a small pocket of fat in the upper eyelids.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Blepharoplasty?

Surgery performed on the upper eyelid is best suited for patients with excess upper eyelid skin. Many women and men develop hooding of the upper eyelid skin or extra skin folds (sagging eyelids) as they age, making them appear tired and creating a feeling of heaviness.

For the lower eyelid, patients will often complain of dark circles, hollowness, or eyelid bags. Friends and family may comment that you look tired and sad. The most definitive and satisfying way to make your eyes appear more youthful is by surgically addressing both the upper and lower eyelids at the same time.

Blepharoplasty Recovery

This is an Outpatient Procedure, and post-operative recovery is straightforward as most patients go home the same day.

Most patients require no pain medication and are back to their daily routine by about a week after surgery.

Most patients require no pain medication and are back to their daily routine by about a week after surgery.
Eyes may initially be sensitive to light and could be irritated for a few days, so a humidifier and eyedrops are essential to recovery. Stitches are removed in the office and most patients use eye drops for a few weeks after eyelid surgery. Plan to return to work within 2 weeks. Contact lenses may be worn at this point. All gym activities may resume within 4 – 6 weeks. By one to two months after surgery, the swelling has resolved, and patients are able to see their final results.

Where Is the Scar?

For the upper eyelids, the incision is hidden in the natural creases of the upper eyelid and when it heals, the scar is camouflaged into the normal fold.
For the lower eyelids, the incisions are placed directly under your eyelashes and again are barely visible to the naked eye. These visible scars at the time of surgery are barely noticeable in a few weeks’ time.

How Long Does Blepharoplasty Take?

On average, upper eyelid surgery is about 1 hour long.
For lower eyelids, about 2 hours. When combined, the surgical time is about 3 hours.
